i'm not sure if i've mentioned on here yet that i have FINALLY signed up for a half-marathon! i've been talking about wanting to do one for years, and decided that it's time to finally make it a reality. so my first half will take place in Steamboat Springs, CO on June 7th. i've been training since January, trying to increase my fitness level to a base level of being able to run 3 miles 3-4 times a week. this week marks 12 weeks until the marathon, and i've started my 12-week training program.
i've recently come into somewhat of a dilemma with this race. i train with my ipod. now this sounds natural i'm sure...who doesn't want to listen to something while they're working out to help make the time pass? my gym actually has a tv attached to each machine...i can watch 'the view' while i run. since the weather's been so nice lately i've started running outside more and i really rely on my music. it keeps me motivated, i have a workout list that includes britney spears, pink, christina aguilera, beyonce, michael jackson, and other artists with an upbeat/dance sound. the other reason i like to work out with my ipod is so i don't have to hear myself breathing...i breathe heavy when i run, it's something i've never been able to conquer. i recently bought noise-cancelling headphones that are actually ear plugs which work really nicely. i've been running off/on for years, and i've worked hard to increase my running economy (how much oxygen i use/need while i run). so i could be having a great work-out, but still breathing heavy. anyway, hearing myself breathe is very demoralizing and it really shuts me down. i just haven't learned yet how to work through it.
the point of all of this is that i've recently found out that we are not allowed to wear ipods during the half-marathon i've signed up for!!! i have to admit...i saw this 'rule' when i was signing up...but i really thought it was more of a 'suggestion' than anything. i thought i'd just sneak it in and put it on after the start or something. but my friend that i'm running it with said nope...you can't wear 'em. it's something to do with running alongside local traffic in country roads (nothing i don't do any given day of the week!!!) and it being a safety issue. so needless to say, i'm a little nervous now!!! i guess i'm going to have to start training without my ipod so i can get used to hearing myself, which i'm really going to hate!! what fun is running if you can't run with britney, pink, beyonce, michael, rhianna and the like?!!! oh...and i am NOT a chatty runner. you might get a little conversation out of me...but i'm not really one to talk and run. so no suggestions about chatting it up with my fellow runners...b/c it ain't gonna happen!!
anyway...anyone have any suggestions about this? call the whole thing off? a different way to view the breathing that won't shut me down? bring the ipod anyway and have my man hand it to me on the course? ;)

While I often ride my bike with headphones on, I know why races forbid it: aside from their liability for your personal safety (getting hit by cars reflects badly not just on you, but on the event), it's because some people are jerks, and when you're running in a crowd and not paying attention (listening to loud music), you can cause problems for people around or behind you.
I usually ride my bike as an escort for the wheelchair competitors during the Madison Marathon, and many times I come up behind people, yell at them to move, but they don't because they can't hear me. In several cases I had to push people out of the way.
Under Iron Man and USA Triathlon competitive rules, you will be immediately expelled from the race for wearing headphones.

I would sneak it in anyway and tell the other runners to stick it!
so, i got lots of responses to this post, both on here and by email. after much thought and trying to run w/o the ipod, i've decided that i'm going to sneak the ipod, wear JUST ONE earphone, and make sure that i can still hear what's going on around me. i have been training this way, and it seems to work. i can still hear myself breathe, which sucks, but i have a distractor in my music. i do acknowledge the safety issue/concerns, which is why i won't wear both headphones. i just can't give up michael. "don't stop til you get enough!!!!!!"
