so today was my husband's birthday. it was a nice day. i managed to schedule all my clients this week so that i didn't have any this evening, and i went into the office to take care of a few quick things this afternoon. i brought my hubby along so i could show him the office, he hadn't had a chance to actually see my work environment yet, so that was nice. other than that, we had a small breakfast at home, ran a couple of errands, and met some of his work buddies for some video poker at a local sports bar for lunch (they do this every week, and it's pretty fun). and then we just tooled around town, looking at neighborhoods we might one day want to live in, and scoping out furniture for our new place (should we get it). we went and spent his birthday money, he made the thank-you-for-the-birthday card/present/money phone calls and we called it a day.
for him, this was a nice day. he said it was relaxing and nice to just bum around and spend the day with me all day (awww, what a sweetie!). a few weeks back i had begun thinking about this day, and tried putting together some surprise plans for him. however, at dinner one night with some friends, it came out that i was planning some surprises for his birthday. my friend offered to help me with these plans. if you know john, you know that he's not really a big fan of surprises. so eventually the plans were revealed...and he decided he wasn't that into them. which is fine...it's his birthday, we should do what he wants to do. so this day was left up to him, and he spent it (for the most part) how he wanted to. i say for the most part b/c he has an injured right hand, in a removeable cast, and he can't ride his bike(s) or play baseball like he wants to be. at any rate, i felt bad b/c it seemed like a really boring way to spend your birthday...tooling around town and what-not...but he insists that it was a great day.
me, i like a little more pomp and circumstance on my birthday!! growing up it was a big day...i always celebrated with friends and family. my mom always made my favorite meal (whatever it happened to be at the time), ordered a cake and had my grandparents over. usually i had a separate party with my friends. there were always plenty of gifts ("if someone wants to give you a gift we don't want to deprive them of that joy" monica-FRIENDS) and i will shamelessly admit, i loved all the attention. it's the one day that's all about you-people you don't talk to very often go out of their way to acknowledge you with a phone call or card, and it just makes you feel good!!
how will i spend my birthday this year? well...for all the pomp and circumstance that i like...my hubby will be out of town!!!! he planned a mountain bike trip with his friends to mesa verde. originally the guys talked like their wives would be going, so we both planned to go, thinking it would be a fun way to spend my birthday. well, then he got together with the guys to plan the trip, and learned that it's a guys only trip-none of the wives are going. and don't think that changed his mind about going for one second!!!! no no, not when there's a mtn bike race to be had!!! so, i came up with my own way to spend my birthday. :o) this year, my birthday happens to fall on mother's day. i was actually born on mother's day. so, what a better way for me to spend my birthday, than to spend it with my mom? that's right, i called up the mother and said "mom, don't make plans for mother's day weekend, i'm coming home!!!" so...for the first time in about forever, i will be spending my birthday just like i used to. with my parents, my brother, and my grandparents. and this birthday, i share with my mom, who always went to great lengths to make sure it was special.
