have we not learned anything?

i want to have Jesus' heart for people. i really do. i have prayed and prayed on that. about a year ago, a good friend and i decided to read a book together and chat about it via email (we are long-distance!)...and that was one of the major points I took away from that study...having Jesus' heart for people. to me this means boundless love, compassion, and understanding for others, among many other things.

but right now watching the news...i can't help but be frustrated. 3 years ago we watched one of the worst tragedies in our country's history affect thousands of lives in New Orleans. there was beyond

a poor response on the part of our government, and safety precautions set in place didn't work. not only that, but countless numbers of people didn't heed the warnings to GET THE 'H' OUT OF TOWN! and what happened? i think we all know. resources were wasted and overextended, and more people's lives were put in danger.

why? why are we seeing this happen again? why can't people listen and not be so incredibly stupid and stubborn? how after seeing the disaster that was Hurricane Katrina are we repeating the same mistakes? i want to be understanding, and know that not everyone has the resources to get out of town...but resources were provided. why didn't people use them? how can you be so selfish as to ignore the warnings...and then we have to send people to go looking for you? it just seems absurd. i have a hard time feeling compassionate about that.

people get stubborn about their homes. you see it all the time: people crying and wailing about "leaving all they've ever worked for". and then refusing to leave. newsflash: nature doesn't care what you've worked for. floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, mudslides, forest fires...it doesn't matter. nature doesn't discriminate.

and after perishing in the flood, the old man asks God, "God, why didn't you save me?" And God said, " I sent you two boats and a helicopter, what more did you need?"
